The Main Types of Garage Doors

by Stefan Gheorghe

Garage doors come in several types, each with its own advantages in function, style, and space usage. Here’s a clear guide to the main options available.

Garage doors type

1. Sectional Garage Doors

The most popular type in the U.S. Sectional doors are made of multiple hinged panels that move along vertical and horizontal tracks. They offer good security, insulation, and space efficiency, as they open parallel to the ceiling.

2. Roll-Up Garage Doors

Common in commercial settings, roll-up doors consist of a single sheet of metal that rolls into a coil above the door opening. They save ceiling space and are very durable, but usually cost more than sectional doors.

3. Side-Sliding Garage Doors

These doors slide horizontally along a lower and upper track. They are ideal for garages with low ceiling clearance or obstructed overhead space. The simple mechanism also allows partial opening for pedestrian access.

4. Side-Hinged Garage Doors

Side-hinged doors open outward like barn doors. They offer a traditional aesthetic and are good for garages used more as workshops or with limited depth. They typically require more driveway space to open fully.

5. Tilt-Up / Canopy Garage Doors

Tilt-up doors pivot upward in a single solid panel.

  • Retractable tilt-up doors slide fully into the garage.
  • Canopy tilt-up doors tilt outward partially, leaving a portion of the door protruding when open.
  • These doors are simple but may require more maintenance and space to operate.
