Restoring Heritage: A Brick Sheepfold with a Striking Hay Roof

In the Dutch countryside, a ruined sheepfold dating back to the early 1800s has been given new life. Once a vital agricultural building, the structure had fallen into disuse when sheep farming for manure became obsolete.

Thanks to HilberinkBosch Architecten, the sheepfold has been restored and transformed into a modern house.

What makes this project stand out is the remarkable hay roof. Its steep, sculptural shape defines the building and roots it firmly in tradition, while the craftsmanship recalls centuries of rural architecture. The roof not only preserves authenticity but also gives the house its bold character in the open landscape.

The focus shifts to the old trusses and rafter roof, rebuilt with modern timber techniques. These exposed beams dominate the interior, setting a warm and spacious atmosphere. The open structure ensures that the original sense of volume and airiness remains intact. Between the trusses, discreet new spaces like a bedroom and bathroom were added, blending modern comfort with historic charm.

Large windows, tucked behind old stable doors, bring light into the once-dark building while keeping the robust brickwork intact. The combination of natural brick, heavy timber, and thatched roofing celebrates both heritage and renewal.
