Perched on the steep coastline of Ligar Bay, New Zealand, the Ligar Bay Bach House by Young Architects redefines the contemporary holiday retreat. This 163 m² residence merges bold structural clarity with raw material honesty, standing confidently against a dense backdrop of native greenery while overlooking the pristine bay below.

The house unfolds as a sequence of elevated pavilions that follow the slope of the land, with generous glazing that frames panoramic coastal views. The upper modules—private bedroom pods—are set apart and connected by exposed walkways, evoking the feel of a luxury treehouse. Concrete, timber, and steel are left exposed, showcasing their textures and forming a palette that feels grounded yet light. Inside, the natural timber cabinetry and oversized woven pendants lend a warm, tactile dimension to the open kitchen and dining area.

What makes this project distinctive is not just its architecture, but the experience it curates. Access to the different levels mimics a trail through nature—with stone steps, gabions, and rope handrails guiding the journey.
